Teaching

I am a registered with the Incorporated Society of Musicians as a professional private teacher and a member of the European String Teachers' Association.

I teach gifted pupils of all ages. My main criteria for taking on pupils are that they are enthusiastic and willing to commit time to their own musical  self-improvement!

I don't believe there is any special magic to learning a musical instrument. However, as with any skill, concentration and hard work are required to develop to a high level. I try to foster a love and appreciation of music;  this helps to produce the motivation to work on the technical challenges involved in playing the cello.

I do not strictly follow any pedagogical method, but prefer to draw on the strengths of the different schools in order to produce the best individual learning experience for each pupil. As a matter of course, I include ear  training tuition within the cello lessons. I believe these listening skills are fundamental to the mastery of the instrument.

I help pupils prepare for auditions, grade exams / diplomas and conservatoire entry. I also teach those who want to play entirely for their own enjoyment and do not require formal assessment.

Different pupils have very different aims, but I hope they all share a joy in music that they want to express through the cello. I see it as my duty to help them to do so as well as they can.
